From the Darkness

It’s all around us. On the news, in our relationships, in the workplace. In our churches (yes, even there!). Down the street. Across the hall. Inside our own minds. Darkness creeps into every crevice of our lives. Depression, despair, discouragement, greed, denial, selfishness. Need I go on?

My children played an interesting game before bed tonight. They turned off all the lights in the house, except for the kitchen light. Then they rushed excitedly through all the rooms with their flashlights, “saving the animals from the darkness.” Before long they had gathered a huge pile of stuffed animals into my daughter’s closet, as if protecting them from something terrible.

Is there something terrible that you need protection from? Does someone you know need protection? Are you going from room to room– looking for souls to save from the darkness?

Maybe you are the one in a dark corner, hoping and praying that some sweet child of God appears with a flashlight at the door. Life tries to weigh us down, burden us with worry and strife, distract us with money and toys, placate us with empty entertainment. And if we are honest with ourselves, we will see the darkness and know that we need to be saved from it. Not once, but every minute of every day.

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

  1. Ok Larry I’ve started a draft. It will probably take years (and then some). So you can stop commenting about it – lol.

Could it be possible to get things like this mixed up? My sister writes fiction, and we resemble each other in many ways so maybe the spiritual wires are crossed in your mind?

Just wondering. 🙂 She is finishing up her first novel.
