Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and other forms of neurotech are now in use for epilepsy, paralysis, depression, and other conditions. Some people also believe that neural implants will help us as humans compete with and/or coexist with artificial general intelligence at that critical near-future point when AI becomes smarter than humanity.

I’ll be honest with you, getting a neural implant would be tempting. I already take a multitude of prescription medications for my own mental health. What if I could trade out the meds (and their side effects) for a single device implanted in my brain?

But the sci-fi horror side of me would never stand for it. My fiction explores all the things that can go wrong with neural implants, from hacking (both physical and digital) to mind control at the hands of a twisted villain. But that’s fiction, right?

What about you? Would you get one?

  1. I tend to agree with your “Sci-Fi horror” side. Have you listened to the “Your Undivided Attention” podcast with Tristan Harris? He talks about this A LOT. Also, check out the Netflix movie “The Social Dilemma” which offers a similar take but in the area of social media hazards.

    1. I haven’t listened to the Harris podcast. I’ll look it up. I’ve been on a Lex Fridman kick lately. Thanks, John! I hope you’ve been well.
