Will AI really kill everyone? The debate has gone mainstream and political, with top AI researchers saying there’s a chance, and Trump calling it a hoax.
I gotta be honest with you, it’s surreal watching everything unfold. Why? Because as a science fiction writer, I’ve been staring down the barrel of that gun for quite some time now.
Like most writers, I’ve done my research. I learned about the alignment problem, recursive self-improvement, and the Singularity. Years ago I even reached out to a top AI researcher at MIT for help with one of my short stories. Being a fiction writer isn’t just making stuff up out of thin air. It’s also about being informed.
And I gotta tell you, it’s really damn hard to go about your daily life when you’re contemplating the AI takeover. Something incredibly dangerous that you hope remains fiction, and yet seems to be edging closer to reality. Indeed, it is already at the door.
So what can we as regular people do while AI grows more powerful with every passing second?
What humans have always done.
Love fiercely. Spend time with each other. Get up every morning and tackle that to-do list. Eat delicious food. Create something for the sheer joy of it. Make it silly, make it deep, make it fantastical, make it terrifying. Whatever floats your boat.
Consume art like it’s a lifeline. Embrace spirituality. Assert your free will.
Because humans?
We’re survivors. There’s a light inside of each of us that no machine can extinguish.
And we won’t go down without a fight.
